Tender marinated beef flank steak is stir-fried with crisp broccoli and vibrant vegetables in a savory sauce made from coconut aminos, garlic, and a touch of sesame oil. Serve it over rice for a satisfying meal that highlights a balance of textures and tastes.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Marinade

  • 1 – 1.2 lb Beef Flank Steak or steak tip, thinly sliced
  • 2-3 tbsp coconut aminos (for marinating)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp arrowroot flour
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil, divided for stir-frying

Vegetables

  • 1/2 head of broccoli (~1 heaping cup)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup carrot slices (optional)
  • 1/4 cup red bell pepper slices (optional)

Sauce

  • 1/3 cup coconut aminos
  • 1/4 cup water or beef stock
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 tbsp arrowroot flour

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: Cut the flank steak into medium-thin strips for quick cooking and even marination.
  2. Marinate the Beef: In a bowl, combine the beef strips with 2-3 tablespoons of coconut aminos, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, and 1 tablespoon arrowroot flour. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and enhance flavor.
  3. Make the Stir Fry Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together 1/3 cup coconut aminos, 1/4 cup water or beef stock, 1 tablespoon rice vinegar, 2 teaspoons sesame oil, and 1/2 tablespoon arrowroot flour. Set aside.
  4. Sauté Garlic and Vegetables: Heat half of the cooking oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add broccoli and carrot slices and cook until tender but still crisp, about 4-5 minutes. Stir in red bell pepper slices if using and cook an additional minute.
  5. Cook the Beef: Push the vegetables to one side of the skillet and add the remaining oil. Add the marinated beef slices and sear until golden brown on all sides, about 3-4 minutes.
  6. Combine and Finish: Reduce heat to medium-low, pour the prepared sauce over the beef and vegetables, and stir everything together until the sauce thickens and coats the ingredients evenly, about 2 minutes.
  7. Serve: Remove from heat and serve the beef and broccoli stir fry over steamed rice. Optionally, garnish with sesame seeds or chopped green onions for added flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • Marinate the beef for at least 30 minutes to ensure tenderness and flavor infusion.
  • Arrowroot flour acts as a thickener and also helps give the beef a smooth texture.
  • You can substitute beef stock with water if preferred.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables such as snap peas or mushrooms for variety.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor.
