Description

A flavorful and quick Beef Lo Mein recipe featuring tender marinated flank steak, fresh vegetables, and a savory homemade sauce tossed with perfectly cooked lo mein noodles. Ready in just 30 minutes, this classic Chinese-American dish is ideal for a satisfying weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Marinade

  • 1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced

Noodles and Vegetables

  • 8 oz lo mein noodles (or spaghetti)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 1/2 cup sliced bell peppers (any color)
  • 1/2 cup snow peas (optional)
  • 3 green onions, sliced

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Beef: In a bowl, combine soy sauce, cornstarch, and sesame oil. Add the thinly sliced flank steak and toss it to coat evenly. Let it marinate for 15 minutes to enhance the flavor and tenderness.
  2. Cook the Noodles: Prepare the lo mein noodles according to the package instructions. Once cooked, drain well and set aside to prevent sticking.
  3. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, sugar, minced garlic, and minced ginger to create a balanced, savory sauce.
  4. Stir-Fry the Beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until it is browned but not overcooked. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
  5. Cook the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Toss in the shredded carrots, broccoli florets, sliced bell peppers, and optional snow peas. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are tender-crisp and vibrant.
  6. Combine Everything: Return the cooked beef to the skillet along with the drained noodles. Pour the prepared sauce over the ingredients. Toss and stir for 2-3 minutes over medium heat, ensuring the noodles, beef, and vegetables are well coated with the sauce.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat and garnish the dish with sliced green onions. Serve the Beef Lo Mein hot for the best flavors and texture.

Notes

  • Flank steak is preferred for its tenderness, but sirloin or skirt steak can be substituted.
  • If lo mein noodles are unavailable, spaghetti or linguine can be used as an alternative.
  • Adjust the amount of sugar according to your taste for sweetness balance.
  • Snow peas are optional but add a nice crunch and color contrast.
  • For a gluten-free version, use tamari or gluten-free soy sauce and check other sauces for gluten content.
