Main Salisbury Steak:
- 1½ pounds ground beef (85/15)
- ½ cup finely chopped onion
- ⅓ cup plain breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Mushroom Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 8 oz cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves or ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Salisbury Steak: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 oval patties.
- Cook the Patties: Brown the patties in olive oil in a skillet. Set aside.
- Make the Mushroom Gravy: Saute mushrooms, onions, and garlic. Add flour, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Simmer until thickened.
- Combine and Simmer: Return patties to the skillet with gravy. Cover and simmer until cooked through.
- Adjust Seasoning and Serve: Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.
