Description

Indulge in the rich flavors of this Caramelized Onion and Cheese Steak Sandwich. Tender steak, sweet caramelized onions, and gooey provolone cheese come together in a hearty hoagie roll for a delicious meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided

For the Steak Sandwich:

  • 1 ½ pounds ribeye or sirloin steak, thinly sliced
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sandwich buns
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • Mayonnaise or garlic aioli (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet, melt butter with olive oil. Add onions and cook for 10 minutes. Sprinkle with brown sugar and ½ teaspoon salt. Cook for an additional 15–20 minutes until golden.
  2. Cook the Steak: In the same skillet, increase heat and add steak. Season with remaining salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for 3–4 minutes.
  3. Assemble the Sandwiches: Reduce heat, add onions back to the skillet with steak. Top with provolone cheese. Cover briefly to melt. Fill hoagie rolls with the cheesy steak mixture.
  4. Serve: Toast rolls, spread with mayo or aioli, fill with steak and onions. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For a spicy kick, add sautéed bell peppers or jalapeños.
  • Try mozzarella or white American cheese instead of provolone.
