For the Caramelized Onions:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt, divided
For the Steak Sandwich:
- 1 ½ pounds ribeye or sirloin steak, thinly sliced
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 4 hoagie rolls or sandwich buns
- 8 slices provolone cheese
- Mayonnaise or garlic aioli (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet, melt butter with olive oil. Add onions and cook for 10 minutes. Sprinkle with brown sugar and ½ teaspoon salt. Cook for an additional 15–20 minutes until golden.
- Cook the Steak: In the same skillet, increase heat and add steak. Season with remaining salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for 3–4 minutes.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Reduce heat, add onions back to the skillet with steak. Top with provolone cheese. Cover briefly to melt. Fill hoagie rolls with the cheesy steak mixture.
- Serve: Toast rolls, spread with mayo or aioli, fill with steak and onions. Enjoy!

- For a spicy kick, add sautéed bell peppers or jalapeños.
- Try mozzarella or white American cheese instead of provolone.
