Ingredients
Scale
Caramelized Onions
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
Flatbreads Topping
- 4 flatbreads (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 cup crumbled feta cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for drizzling)
Instructions
- Heat the onions: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes until the onions start to soften.
- Caramelize the onions: Add the sugar and continue to cook for another 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions are deeply caramelized and golden brown. If they start to stick, add a splash of water to prevent burning.
- Add balsamic vinegar: Stir in the balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 2 minutes to enhance the flavor. Remove the skillet from heat and set aside.
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the flatbreads.
- Assemble the flatbreads: Place the flatbreads on a baking sheet. Evenly distribute the caramelized onions over each flatbread.
- Add toppings: Sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese and thyme leaves on top of the onions. Season with black pepper to taste.
- Bake the flatbreads: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the flatbreads are crispy and the cheese is slightly melted.
- Finish and serve: Remove the flatbreads from the oven and drizzle with honey if desired. Slice and serve warm for best flavor.
Notes
- If caramelizing onions takes too long or sticks, adding a little water or lowering the heat can prevent burning.
- Substitute feta with goat cheese or ricotta for a different cheese flavor.
- Use gluten-free flatbreads if you need to make this recipe gluten-free.
- Honey drizzle is optional and adds a nice contrast to the salty feta and caramelized onions.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for 1-2 days and reheated in the oven to maintain crispiness.
