Description

Delicious Caramelized Onion & Feta Flatbreads combine sweet, slow-cooked onions with tangy feta cheese over warm, soft flatbreads. This Mediterranean-inspired recipe is perfect as a flavorful appetizer or light main course, featuring a perfect balance of savory and sweet flavors with a crisp, golden finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Flatbreads

  • 2 large flatbreads or naan

Caramelized Onions

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar

Toppings

  • 1 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • Optional: red pepper flakes for garnish

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions along with salt and black pepper. Cook slowly for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure even caramelization, until the onions are soft, golden, and richly caramelized. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and cook for another 1-2 minutes to deepen the flavor.
  2. Preheat Oven and Prepare Flatbreads: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). While the oven is heating, place the flatbreads on a baking sheet to prepare for topping.
  3. Assemble Flatbreads: Evenly spread the caramelized onions over the surface of each flatbread. Sprinkle the crumbled feta cheese generously on top of the onions.
  4. Bake: Bake the assembled flatbreads in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until they are warmed through and the feta cheese turns slightly golden and bubbly.
  5. Garnish and Serve: Remove the flatbreads from the oven. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and, if desired, sprinkle with red pepper flakes for a touch of heat. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Feel free to add toppings like arugula, olives, or sun-dried tomatoes to enhance the flavor profile.
  • For a crispier flatbread, lightly toast the flatbreads before adding the caramelized onions and toppings.
