Ingredients
Scale
Caramelized Onions
- 2 large onions, sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Tartlets
- 1 sheet puff pastry
- 1 cup grated cheese (such as Gruyère or cheddar)
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the tartlets.
- Caramelize the Onions: Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions along with salt and pepper. Cook slowly for about 20 minutes until the onions are soft and caramelized, developing a rich sweet flavor.
- Prepare the Puff Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Using a round cutter, cut out small circles that will form the base of the tartlets.
- Assemble the Tartlets: Place the pastry circles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spoon a generous amount of the caramelized onions onto each circle, then sprinkle evenly with the grated cheese.
- Bake: Bake the tartlets in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown and the cheese has melted beautifully.
- Garnish and Serve: Once baked, remove the tartlets from the oven and garnish each with fresh thyme leaves before serving warm.
Notes
- Use a combination of Gruyère and cheddar cheese for a richer flavor.
- Make sure to caramelize onions slowly to avoid burning and to bring out their natural sweetness.
- You can prepare the caramelized onions in advance and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
- For a gluten-free option, substitute puff pastry with a gluten-free pastry crust.
- Serve these tartlets warm for the best taste and texture.
