Sauce Topping:

  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 3/4 cups hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips if using.
  4. Spread Batter: Spread batter in the prepared dish.
  5. Prepare Topping: Mix brown sugar and cocoa powder, then sprinkle over the batter.
  6. Add Hot Water: Carefully pour hot water over the top without stirring.
  7. Bake: Bake for 35-40 minutes until set on top with a pudding-like sauce underneath.
  8. Cool and Serve: Let cool for 10 minutes before serving warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
