Ingredients
Scale
For the cake:
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (or homemade chocolate cake)
- Ingredients required for cake mix (typically eggs, oil, and water)
For the chocolate pudding:
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 (3.4-ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
For the whipped cream:
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the trifle layers:
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional for garnish)
- 1/2 cup crushed chocolate cookies (optional for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the cake: Preheat the oven according to the package instructions. Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan. Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the package directions, then bake as directed. Allow the cake to cool completely.
- Make the chocolate pudding: In a medium bowl, whisk together the whole milk and instant chocolate pudding mix. Once combined, stir in the heavy cream. Refrigerate the pudding for at least 10-15 minutes to thicken.
- Make the whipped cream: In a large mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
- Assemble the trifle: Cut the cooled cake into cubes. In a large trifle dish or individual serving cups, layer the ingredients starting with a layer of cake cubes. Follow with a layer of chocolate pudding, then a layer of whipped cream. Repeat the layers until the dish is filled, finishing with a layer of whipped cream on top.
- Garnish: Sprinkle chocolate chips and crushed chocolate cookies on top for extra decoration and texture.
- Chill and serve: Refrigerate the trifle for at least 2 hours (or overnight) to allow the flavors to meld together. Serve chilled.
Notes
- For added richness, you can substitute half of the whipped cream with additional chocolate pudding or use chocolate ganache between layers.
- This dessert is very customizable — you can also add layers of fruit like raspberries or strawberries to cut through the richness of the chocolate.
- If you prefer, you can use a store-bought cake instead of making it from scratch for a quicker version.
