Description

Classic Water Pie is a simple, vintage dessert featuring a sweet, custard-like filling made from water, sugar, and flour, baked in a flaky pie crust. This easy-to-make pie delivers nostalgic comfort with a smooth, lightly sweet flavor enhanced by vanilla and optional warm spices like cinnamon or nutmeg.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Crust

  • 1 pre-made or homemade pie crust

Filling

  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for added flavor

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pie Crust: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie dish. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges for decoration. Prick the bottom of the crust with a fork to prevent bubbling during baking.
  2. Mix the Filling: In a medium bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and flour until evenly combined. Gradually add the water to the dry mixture, stirring continuously until smooth. Add the vanilla extract and mix thoroughly to incorporate.
  3. Assemble the Pie: Pour the water filling mixture into the prepared pie crust. Evenly distribute the small pieces of unsalted butter on top of the filling. If desired, sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg over the filling for extra flavor.
  4. Bake the Pie: Place the pie dish on the middle rack of the preheated oven. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling has set but still jiggles slightly in the center.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool to room temperature. The filling will continue to firm up as it cools. For best results, refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours before serving.
  6. Optional Toppings: Serve the water pie plain or garnish with whipped cream, powdered sugar, or a drizzle of caramel sauce for added indulgence and flavor.

Notes

  • Pricking the pie crust helps prevent air bubbles forming during baking.
  • The filling will appear a bit jiggly right out of the oven but will firm as it cools and chills.
  • For a richer flavor, use homemade pie crust or high-quality butter.
  • Optional spices like cinnamon or nutmeg add a warm note but can be omitted for a more neutral taste.
  • Refrigerate the pie before serving to ensure the custard-like filling properly sets.
  • Leftovers should be stored covered in the refrigerator and consumed within 3-4 days.
