Description

This Creamed Cabbage and Ground Beef Casserole is a comforting and satisfying dish that combines savory ground beef with tender cabbage in a creamy sauce, topped with melted cheese. It’s a hearty and flavorful meal that the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Casserole:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small head green cabbage (about 6 cups), chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups milk
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare baking dish: Preheat oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook ground beef and onion: In a skillet, cook ground beef and chopped onion until beef is browned and onion is soft. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Drain excess fat.
  3. Sauté cabbage and make sauce: In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté cabbage until soft. Sprinkle flour, stir, then slowly add milk. Cook until thickened. Stir in sour cream, mustard, salt, pepper, and 1 cup of cheddar cheese until smooth.
  4. Combine and bake: Add cooked beef to the skillet, mix, then transfer to the baking dish. Top with remaining cheese and paprika. Bake for 20–25 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  5. Rest and garnish: Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.

Notes

  • For a low-carb version, skip the flour and thicken the sauce with cream cheese.
  • This dish reheats well and can be made ahead and baked just before serving.
