Description

Creamy Layered John Wayne Casserole is a hearty and flavorful dish that combines seasoned ground beef, creamy cheese layers, and fresh vegetables, all baked together for a comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef Layer:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 packet taco seasoning mix
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 (8-ounce) can diced green chiles (drained)

For the Cheese Layer:

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese (divided)

For the Vegetable Layer:

  • 1 medium onion (sliced)
  • 2 large tomatoes (sliced)
  • 1 green bell pepper (sliced)

Additional Ingredients:

  • 2 cups refrigerated biscuit dough (cut into small pieces or flattened into a crust)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Cook the beef: In a skillet, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat, then add taco seasoning and water. Simmer for 5 minutes and set aside.
  3. Prepare the cheese mixture: Mix sour cream, mayonnaise, half of cheddar cheese, and half of Monterey Jack cheese in a bowl.
  4. Layer the casserole: Press biscuit dough into the baking dish. Layer beef, green chiles, cheese mixture, onions, tomatoes, and bell peppers on top. Finish with remaining cheeses.
  5. Bake: Bake for 30–35 minutes until cheese is melted, bubbly, and crust is cooked. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.
