Description

Indulge in the rich and creamy goodness of Delmonico Potatoes, a classic cheesy potato casserole that’s perfect for any occasion. This comforting side dish features tender potatoes smothered in a decadent cheese sauce and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs russet potatoes (peeled and diced)

Cheese Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Topping:

  • 1/2 cup seasoned breadcrumbs (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Boil the potatoes: Boil the diced potatoes in salted water for 5–7 minutes until just barely tender. Drain and set aside.
  3. Make the cheese sauce: In a saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes. Gradually add the milk and cream, whisking constantly until thickened, about 4–5 minutes. Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and mix in the cheddar and Parmesan cheeses until melted and smooth.
  4. Combine potatoes and sauce: Fold the cooked potatoes into the cheese sauce and transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. If using breadcrumbs, combine them with the melted butter and sprinkle over the top.
  5. Bake: Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  6. Serve: Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute half the milk with more cream.
  • Add cooked, crumbled bacon or sautéed onions for a savory twist.
