Description

These French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes are a delicious twist on the classic sandwich. Caramelized onions and flavorful ground beef come together in a savory sauce, topped with gooey cheese and served on toasted buns. Perfect for a quick and satisfying dinner!

Ingredients

Scale

For the caramelized onions:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced

For the beef mixture:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup beef broth

For serving:

  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
  • butter for toasting buns (optional)
  • fresh thyme for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet, add onions, and cook until golden and caramelized.
  2. Cook the beef: Brown ground beef in the same skillet, then add Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir in beef broth and simmer.
  3. Assemble: Toast buns, spoon beef mixture onto the bottom bun, top with cheese, let it melt, and cover with the top bun. Serve hot garnished with thyme.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, melt the cheese on top of the beef mixture in the skillet before assembling.
  • You can also add a splash of red wine during caramelization for richness.
