Description
These Japanese Crème Filled Sandwiches are a delightful treat featuring soft milk bread filled with whipped cream, custard, and fresh fruit. A perfect balance of flavors and textures, these sandwiches are a must-try for any dessert lover.
Ingredients
Scale
Bread:
- 6 slices soft Japanese milk bread (shokupan), crusts removed
Filling:
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup custard or pastry cream (optional)
- Fresh fruit such as strawberries, kiwi, or mandarin oranges (sliced thin)
- Plastic wrap for shaping
Instructions
- Prepare Filling: In a mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. If using, gently fold in the custard for a richer filling.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Lay out the slices of milk bread and flatten slightly with a rolling pin. Spread a generous layer of the whipped cream mixture onto three slices of bread. Arrange sliced fruit on top of the cream, leaving a little space around the edges. Top with the remaining bread slices to form sandwiches.
- Chill and Serve: Wrap each sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to set. Once chilled, unwrap and slice in half diagonally with a sharp knife to reveal the fruit and cream filling. Serve cold.
Notes
- Japanese milk bread is ideal for its soft, pillowy texture, but any soft white bread can be used.
- These sandwiches are best enjoyed the same day they’re made.
- Use fruit with low moisture to prevent sogginess.
