  • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice

For the topping:

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: to 350°F (175°C). Place the butter in a 9×9-inch or similar-size baking dish and put it in the oven to melt while the oven preheats.
  2. Mix the batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, 1 cup sugar, lemon zest, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk until just combined. Pour the batter over the melted butter in the baking dish.
  3. Add lemon mixture: Mix lemon juice with 3/4 cup sugar and pour over the batter. Do not stir.
  4. Pour hot water: Carefully pour hot water over everything. Do not mix.
  5. Bake: Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden and set.
  6. Cool and serve: Let cool for 10–15 minutes before serving.
