Description

Monte Cristo Sandwiches are a deliciously indulgent blend of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese layered between slices of bread, dipped in an egg mixture, and pan-fried to golden perfection. Finished with a dusting of powdered sugar and served with fruity jam, these sandwiches offer a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors, ideal for breakfast, brunch, or lunch.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread & Meat

  • 8 slices white or sandwich bread
  • 4 slices cooked ham
  • 4 slices cooked turkey

Cheese

  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese (optional)

Egg Mixture

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For Cooking & Serving

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Raspberry or strawberry jam for serving

Instructions

  1. Assemble Sandwiches: Layer ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, and cheddar cheese if using, between two slices of bread to create four sandwiches.
  2. Prepare Egg Mixture: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
  3. Heat Skillet: Place a large skillet over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter, allowing it to melt and coat the surface evenly.
  4. Dip Sandwiches: Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well coated but not soggy.
  5. Cook Sandwiches: Place the dipped sandwiches in the hot skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.
  6. Keep Warm: Remove cooked sandwiches from the skillet and keep them warm while you cook the remaining sandwiches, adding more butter as needed for frying.
  7. Serve: Lightly dust the cooked sandwiches with powdered sugar and serve them with raspberry or strawberry jam on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • For a crispier sandwich, cook on medium-low heat and allow the sandwich to cook slowly, improving texture without burning.
  • You can opt to bake the sandwiches in an oven preheated to 375°F for 10 to 12 minutes if you prefer baking over frying.
  • These sandwiches make a decadent breakfast, brunch, or lunch option.
