Description

These Swedish meatballs are a comforting and classic dish that combines a mix of ground beef and pork with aromatic spices, served in a creamy gravy. Perfectly tender and flavorful, they are a staple in Swedish cuisine and a favorite for cozy family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ pound ground pork
  • ½ cup plain breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely grated
  • 1 egg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for frying)

For the gravy:

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the meatballs: In a large bowl, combine breadcrumbs and milk. Add ground beef, ground pork, grated onion, egg, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix gently and form into small balls.
  2. Cook the meatballs: Brown the meatballs in olive oil in a skillet. Set aside.
  3. Make the gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter, whisk in flour, then gradually add beef broth. Simmer and add cream, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard.
  4. Combine and simmer: Return meatballs to the skillet, simmer in the sauce until cooked through and coated.
  5. Serve: Enjoy the meatballs with your choice of sides.

Notes

  • For extra tender meatballs, avoid overmixing the meat mixture.
  • These meatballs can be made ahead and frozen for later use.
