Description

Soft and sweet homemade rolls made with sweetened condensed milk, perfect for breakfast or snacks. These rolls have a tender crumb and a glossy golden finish thanks to an egg wash, baked to perfection for a delightful treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk, melted butter, granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until well combined.
  3. Add Yeast Mixture: Add the frothy yeast mixture to the large bowl and mix thoroughly.
  4. Add Flour Gradually: Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.
  5. Knead Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  6. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  7. Shape Rolls: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  8. Arrange Dough Balls: Place the dough balls on a greased baking sheet or in a greased baking pan, leaving some space between them to allow for expansion.
  9. Second Rise: Cover the dough balls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  10. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
  11. Prepare Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and tablespoon of water for the egg wash.
  12. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the top of each roll with the egg wash to give them a glossy finish.
  13. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  14. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the water for activating yeast is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
  • If dough is sticky, gradually add more flour but avoid making it too stiff.
  • Letting the dough rise sufficiently is key for soft, fluffy rolls.
  • Brush rolls with egg wash carefully to achieve a beautiful shiny crust.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding cinnamon or a sprinkle of sugar on top before baking.
