Description

This Syrian Chickpea and Yogurt Casserole is a flavorful and comforting dish combining tender chickpeas with aromatic spices and creamy yogurt, baked to perfection. Ideal for a nutritious and hearty meal, this recipe blends Middle Eastern spices with fresh parsley for a delightful experience that’s both easy to prepare and satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale

Chickpea Mixture

  • 2 cups cooked chickpeas
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • Salt to taste

Additional Ingredients

  • 2 cups plain yogurt
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it is ready for baking the casserole.
  2. Sauté Onions and Garlic: In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add finely chopped onions and minced garlic, and sauté until they are soft and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add Chickpeas and Spices: Stir in the cooked chickpeas along with ground cumin, ground coriander, paprika, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and salt. Mix well to coat the chickpeas evenly with the spices and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes to meld the flavors.
  4. Layer Chickpea Mixture and Yogurt: In a baking dish, spread half of the chickpea mixture evenly. Pour and spread half of the plain yogurt on top. Repeat with the remaining chickpea mixture and finish with the remaining yogurt, creating alternating layers.
  5. Add Fresh Parsley and Bake: Sprinkle the chopped fresh parsley over the top layer of yogurt. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes until the casserole is heated through and slightly set.
  6. Serve Warm: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving warm. Enjoy this comforting and flavorful Syrian dish as a main or side.

Notes

  • You can substitute plain Greek yogurt for a thicker texture.
  • Adjust cayenne pepper according to your preferred spice level.
  • Serve with warm pita bread or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
  • This dish can be prepared ahead and refrigerated; reheat gently before serving.
  • For a vegan alternative, replace yogurt with a plant-based yogurt.
