Description

Indulge in the rich, comforting flavors of this traditional apple butter. Slow-cooked to perfection, it’s a sweet and spiced spread that captures the essence of fall.

Ingredients

Apples:

6 pounds apples (such as Fuji, Gala, or McIntosh), peeled, cored, and chopped

Sugar Mixture:

2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt

Vanilla Extract:

1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare Apples: Place the chopped apples in a large slow cooker.
  2. Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and salt. Stir until the apples are evenly coated.

  3. Cook: Cover and cook on low for 10 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft and dark brown.
  4. Remove the lid and use an immersion blender to puree the apple mixture until smooth (or transfer in batches to a regular blender).

  5. Flavor: Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Continue cooking uncovered on low for another 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apple butter is thick and spreadable.

  7. Store: Spoon the apple butter into sterilized jars and let cool completely before sealing and refrigerating.
