Ingredients
Scale
Vegan Sloppy Joe Mix
- 1 can of lentils, drained (about 15 oz)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 cup of tomato sauce
- 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon of chili powder
- 1 teaspoon of cumin
- Salt and pepper to taste
To Serve
- 4 burger buns
Instructions
- Sauté aromatics: Heat a pan over medium heat and add a small amount of oil or water. Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic, cooking and stirring occasionally until they become soft and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add lentils and sauce: To the softened veggies, add the drained lentils, tomato sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, and cumin. Stir well to combine all the ingredients evenly.
- Simmer mixture: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Season to taste: Taste the sloppy joe mixture and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper according to your preference. Stir again to distribute the seasoning.
- Assemble and serve: Spoon the warm lentil mixture generously onto the burger buns. Serve immediately while hot for the best taste and texture.
